Varicose veins are abnormal, twisted, and dilated blood vessels that are caused by the weakening of the vessel wall. They are elongated, enlarged, and tortuous superficial veins that are present in the lower limbs. It is a progressive disease and is most common in the mid-20s. This phenomenon tends to affect females more than males.


Veins in the body are divided into superficial venous system (SVS) and deep venous system (DVS). The types of superficial veins are small saphenous vein (SSV), which runs to the knee from the ankle and great saphenous vein (GSV), which runs to the groin from the ankle.

The perforating veins (PV) are present in different numbers and are connected to the superficial venous system. These veins join deep veins by passing through openings in the deep fascia. The deep venous can be divided into popliteal vein (largest deep vein) and femoral vein (longest deep vein).
