With antibiotic resistance rising, researchers are looking for ways to reduce use of these drugs. Some cattle once fed antibiotic-laced food now get probiotic feed that can bolster population of helpful bacteria in the animal's gut. The idea is that if a large population of beneficial bacteria is in place, then harmful bacteria cannot become established or thrive. Which ecological principle is guiding this practice?

Summary Introduction

To determine:  The ecological principle that guides the given practice.

Concept introduction:

The interactions among members of different species are called inter-specific interactions. These interactions include predation, herbivory, symbiosis (mutualism, commensalism and parasitism), interspecific competition, and facilitation.

Competition is a type of interspecific interaction in which both the species are harmed. They are of mainly two types – Interspecific competition and intraspecific competition.

Explanation

As given in the problem statement, the cattle that are supplied with antibiotic-laced food got probiotic feed; it is the substance that helps to stimulate the growth of microorganisms. This probiotic feed can increase the population of the beneficial bacteria that are present in the gut of animals. Thus, if a drastic increase in the population of these beneficial bacteria occurs, then the pathogenic bacteria will not be found.

The main principle underlying this situation is competitive exclusion. Competitive explosion explains that when two species compete for the same limiting resource in order to reproduce or survive, the better species will force the less competitive species to death...
