By a currently favoured hypothesis, species richness of a community is greatest when physical disturbances are of ______ intensity and frequency.

  1. a. low
  2. b. intermediate
  3. c. high
  4. d. variable

Summary Introduction

Introduction: The branch of science that deals with the study of the geographic distribution of species is called biogeography. The total number of species present in a given area is called as species richness. The species present in a community can change over many generations. Some of these species alter the habitat that allows other species to come and substitute them. These changes that take place in a community are collectively called as ecological succession. They are of mainly of two types namely primary succession and secondary succession.

Reason for the correct answer:

The species richness present in a community can change due to the biological and physical disturbances. A hypothesis was stated based upon this idea. It states that “species richness is the greatest in communities where disturbances are moderate in their intensity or frequency”. If there occurs moderate disturbances, then the community consists of a mixture of early and late successional species. Thus, there will be more diverse species present in the intermediate intensity and frequency.

Option b. is given as “intermediate”.

The species richness is the greatest when the physical disturbances are of intermediate intensity and frequency.

Hence, the correct answer is option b.

Reasons for the incorrect answers:

Option a. is given as “low”.

If there is a low intensity and frequency, then the species will not be able to adapt to the changes in their environment...
