Textbook Problem

What protection is available from excessive starting currents in the event the timing relays cut out the starting resistors too rapidly for the connected load?

To determine

Explain the protection that is available from excessive currents during the event of the timing relays that cut outs the starting resistors too rapidly for connected load.

Explanation of Solution

The double break contacts represented as M is used to minimize the DC arc. The contacts that are connected in series form with the field accelerating (FA) relay contacts across M and rheostat in armature circuit, and the double break contacts are used to divide the arcs of the interrupting inductive circuits.

The series coil of the FA relay contact receive the maximum flow of current and closes the FA relay contacts in order to shunt the circuit across the parallel field rheostat. Therefore, the counter emf and excessive current of the armature can be prevented by the maximum field strength...
