Textbook Problem

Distinguish between the roles of the respiratory medium and the respiratory surface in respiratory systems.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The function of the respiratory surface and respiratory medium in the respiratory system.

Respiration is one of the crucial part of life processes in which a series of organs are participating in taking oxygen in and expel out carbon dioxide. Exchange of gases takes place in both plants and animals. In humans, a pair of lungs is the primary organ for exchanging gases. It involves four processes, breathing, external respiration, internal respiration, and cellular respiration.

Respiratory medium is the medium by which the organism is able to take oxygen from the given medium either air or water. The medium for the terrestrial animals is air while for aquatic animals, the medium is water. It is also called external respiration by which organisms exchange gases with the surroundings.

Exchange of gases takes place through the respiratory surface via diffusion process. Respiratory surface is made up of epithelial cells and it acts as a boundary or interface between the body and the respiratory medium...
