Question
Chapter 48, Problem 1DAA
Summary Introduction
To determine: The common sex in offspring of women with less than one microgram per milliliter of PCB in serum.
Concept introduction:
Imbalance in sex ratio may arise as an effect of various factors such as natural factors, exposure to various contaminated chemicals, pesticides, and other environmental contaminants. Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are widespread environmental contaminants that possess teratogenic and oncogenic properties. These chemicals increase the male/female ratio. The maternal contamination with PCBs is also connected with low birth weight and shorter height in males.

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmissible disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Neiserria gonorrhoeae. In the 1940s, penicillin was introduced as an antibiotic to treat gonorrhea. In particular, the drug inhibits the formation of new cell walls in dividing bacterial cells, making new cells vulnerable to the human body's defences. However, a new strain of Neiserria gonorrhoeae was found that is capable of breaking down penicillin, making this strain resistant. The emergence of this new strain has been associated with instances of non-strict compliance of certain patients on the use of penicillin as well as the improper administration of the drug. Based on the information given, formulate a strategy that could help control this new strain.

The bacteria that comprise this microbial community serve a number of important, beneficial functions. However, some bacterial species have been suggested to play a role in certain forms of cancer. One such bacteria is Fusobacterium nucleatum (i.e., F. nucleatum). Investigators wishing to study the role of F. nucleatum in colorectal cancer developed a new assay for detecting these bacteria in tumor tissue. In controlled experiments, the test was highly sensitive in detecting F. nucleatum and also had high specificity. To examine consistency in their test findings, the investigators also conducted repeat tests in 50 tissue samples. From these repeat tests, the investigators observed that the overall number of samples in which F. nucleatum was detected was almost identical (10 out of 50 on the first test vs. 11 out of 50 on the repeat test); for 9 samples, F. nucleatum was detected on both the initial and the…arrow_forwardCorticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that alter the transcription of many genes. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory drugs that are used to treat individuals with allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases, or organ transplants. These compounds have a wide range of effects on leukocytes and on inflammatory cytokine production. One common use for corticosteroids is as an inhaled treatment for individuals with asthma. Interestingly, inhaled corticosteroids provide significant benefit to asthma patients with high numbers of eosinophils in their airways, but not to those patients with high numbers of neutrophils, but normal numbers of eosinophils. One reason for this finding may be that: Corticosteroids don’t inhibit IL-13 production in the airways Corticosteroids don’t inhibit release of IL-33 by airway epithelial cells Corticosteroids induce apoptosis of Treg cells Corticosteroids induce apoptosis of eosinophils Corticosteroids don’t work well as combination therapy with…arrow_forward

- When present on the leaves of plants, the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae can promote frost damage to plants. Mutant strains, lacking the “ice” gene, have been applied to plants to try and protect the plants from wild-type P. syringae-induced frost. Assume that I am telling the truth that wild-type P. syringae nucleates ice formation at -2 °C, and provide an explanation as to why application of this altered (mutant) bacterium to plants might be a beneficial agricultural strategy in areas where morning lows occasionally dip down to 28-30 °F.arrow_forwardSuppose that you are hired by a biotechnology firm to produce a strain of giant fruit flies, by using recombinant DNA technology, so that genetics students will not be forced to strain their eyes when looking at tiny flies. - Some advocate stockpiling the drug Tamiflu in the event of an influenza pandemic. Others point out that wealthy, Western nations would have an unfair advantage because developing nations (where the pandemic is most likely to start) would not have access to this expensive antiviral. Furthermore, some fear that indiscriminate use of the drug would promote the evolution of resistant flu strains. Given these caveats, do you think developed nations should stockpile Tamiflu for the protection and treatment of their citizens?
