Textbook Problem

Define the terms osmosis, osmolarity, hypoosmotic, osmoregulator, and transport epithelium.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The definition of the terms osmosis, osmolarity, hypoosmotic, osmoregulator, and transport epithelium.

Introduction:

The living cells contain water and are also surrounded by an aqueous environment. The water from the external environment surrounds the cells in the simplest animals. The extracellular fluid surrounds the cells, separated from the external environment by a body covering in complex animals. The cells exchange water and solute with the surrounding fluid in order to maintain the osmotic balance through certain mechanisms.

Explanation

The terms osmosis, osmolarity, hypoosmotic, osmoregulatory, and transport epithelium are defined below:

Osmosis: Water molecules move from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration via a selectively permeable membrane. The region with low concentration of solute has more water molecules and the region with high concentration of solute has fewer water molecules.

Osmolarity: The total solute concentration of a solution is called its osmolarity. It is measured in osmoles, that is, the number of solute molecules and ions (in moles) per liter of solution.

Hypoosmotic: When solutions are present on either side of a selectively permeable membrane, the solution that has a lower osmolarity is called hypoosmotic, compared to the solution with the higher osmolarity...
