Distinguish between ectothermy and endothermy. Give one advantage and one disadvantage for each form of thermoregulation.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The differences between ectothermy and endothermy with one advantage and one disadvantage associated with them.

Introduction:

The animals maintain their body temperature within the range (0°C to 45°C), because their cells cannot survive beyond this temperature range. The lipid bilayer of cells get frozen below 0°C, and the proteins and nucleic acid get unfolded and destroyed above 45°C; so, to maintain their body temperature within this temperature range, they need to regulate their body temperature.

Explanation

The temperature regulation of animals to maintain their body temperature within the preset temperature range is called as thermoregulation. The animals are classified into categories on the basis of thermoregulation: ectotherms and endotherms, and the act of being ectotherms and endotherms is called ectothermy and endothermy, respectively. The distinction between ectothermy and endothermy is summarized in the table below with one advantage and one disadvantage associated with them.

S. No. Ectothermy Endothermy
1. Ectothermy is the act of being ectotherms. Endothermy is the act of being endotherms.
2. Animals that obtain heat primarily from external environment are called ectotherms. Animals that obtain heat primarily from the internal physiological processes are called endotherms.
3. Ectotherms regulate body temperature by exchanging the heat with external environment. Endotherms regulate body temperature by two mechanisms—(1) by regulating the amount of heat generated by internal oxidative reaction and (2) by regulating the amount of heat exchanged with the environment...
