Chapter 4.9, Problem 28P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The value of specific rotation for the given compound has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The specific rotation, [α], is a fundamental property of chiral substances that is expressed as the angle to which the material causes polarized light to rotate at a particular temperature, wavelength, and concentration.

The specific rotation of a molecule can be calculated by using the formula given below.

  [α]Tλ=αobs(degree)l(dm).C(gmL)

alpha (α) represents the observed rotation measured with a polarimeter. l represents the length of the sample tube.     C is the concentration of a solution of a pure sample.λ is the wave length of the light.

The specific rotation (s) carvone (at 20°C) is +61. A chemist prepared a mixture of (R) carvone and its enantiomer, and this mixture had an observed rotation of -55. What is the specific rotation of (R)-carvone at 20°C?
The observed rotation of a solution of 1.2 g of a compound in 10 mL of water is +0.75 degrees. If the pathlength is 10 cm, what is the specific rotation of the compound?
When 0.018 g of cholesterol is dissolved in 1.00 mL of ether and placed in a sample cell 10.0 cm in length, the observed rotation at 20 degrees (Using the D line of sodium) is -0.0567 degrees. Calculate the specific rotation of cholesterol.  specific rotation= [α] =
