Given

The mass left after loss of 0.277g is,

4.0g - 0.277g = 3.723g

The value 3.723g is the mass of MO2(s) .

The reaction of M2S3(s) in air to produce MO2(s) is,

M2S3(s)+ 5O2(g)+ Heat 2MO2(s)+3SO2(g)

It is clear from the reaction that, two moles of reactant M2S3(s) should give two moles of product MO2(s).

Molar mass is the sum of atomic mass of individual atoms. The molar mass of M2S3(s) is,

2A + 3(32.07g/mol)

Where,

A is atomic mass of element M.

The molar mass of MO2(s) is,

2A + 4(15.999g/mol)

The mass of compound is calculated by using the formula,
