The Lewis structures of elements are combined to form the Lewis structures of compounds.

The dots are moved from the Lewis structure of a metal to the Lewis structure of a nonmetal.

A chemical bond in the Lewis model includes the sharing or transfer of valence electrons to acquire a stable configuration (octet) for the bonding atoms.

If electrons are transferred during the formation of a chemical bond, the bond will be ionic.

The metal becomes a cation and the nonmetal becomes an anion.

Explanation of Solution

a) KI

First, draw the Lewis structures of potassium (K) and iodine (I) as follows:

Here, potassium must lose its 1 electron while iodine must gain one electron to complete octet. Hence, the Lewis structure for KI is as follows:

b) CaBr2

First, draw the Lewis structures of calcium (Ca) and bromine (Br) as follows:

Here, calcium must lose 2 of its electrons while bromine must gain one electron to complete octet. Therefore, two Br atoms are needed for every Ca atom. Hence, the Lewis structure for CaBr2 is as follows:
