The role of Government coerce in maximizing economic efficiency.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

When the government is allowed to coerce in the economy during some situations, it will help the economy to maximize the economic efficiency. The market system has the inherent problem for market failure. The market failure can be handled by the introduction of the public goods which will enforce the positive externalities.

The government can easily identify the unethical practices in the economy such as fraud and extortion etc. when the government is invested with the right to coerce; it can correct the unethical practices. It will help to reduce the risks associated with markets. Thus, investing the government with the right to coerce in the economy will help to maximize the economic efficiency.

Newfoundland’s fishing industry has recently declined sharply due to overfish- ing, even though fishing companies were supposedly bound by a quota agree- ment. If all fishermen had abided by the agreement, yields could have been maintained at high levels. LO4 Model this situation as a prisoner’s dilemma in which the players are Company A and Company B and the strategies are to keep the quota and break the quota. Include appropriate payoffs in the matrix. Explain why overfishing is inevitable in the absence of effective enforcement of the quota agreement. Provide another environmental example of a prisoner’s dilemma. In many potential prisoner’s dilemmas, a way out of the dilemma for a would-be cooperator is to make reliable character judgments about the trustworthiness of potential partners. Explain why this solution is not avail- able in many situations involving degradation of the environment.

There were lots of similarities between Britain's system of government and that of the individual British colonies in North America. One difference, though, was that a far larger proportion of male residents experienced direct representation in theirlegislatures, rather than the "virtual representation" that most Britons experienced inEngland and Scotland. Why? 1.Because elections for office in the colonial legislatures were done by secretballot. 2.Because ownership of enough property to meet the property requirements forvoting was more common in the colonies than it was in Britain. 3.Because the colonists thought slavery, in both the political sense and actualslavery, was more wrong than did their British counterparts. 4.Because only enslaved people were prevented from having voting rights in the colonies.

But person 1 faces a market wage w1, and person 2 faces a market wage w2, with w1 > w2. 1) Draw the budget constraint faced by the two-person household. In many models, the amount of government offered services that is socially and economically efficient tends to be much smaller than that is actually produced and given to the people. Discuss why this appears to be the case, and show with a graph where the efficient level of government output would lie with respect to actual output. Do you understand why historically, the level of government services provided tends to rise irrespective of what the efficient level ought to be? Why would this be?
