Answer to Problem 1RD

The Moon produces the tidal bulges on the water bodies of the Earth which further results in tides.

Explanation of Solution

The tides that arise in the oceans of the Earth are the result of the gravitational pull by the Moon and the Sun. The Moon and the Sun produces the tidal bulges, the size of these bulges depends upon the orientation of the both the Moon and the Sun with respect to the Earth.

The difference of the gravitational pull by the Moon and the Sun results in a force called the Tidal force, also the force is small but it can produce the deformation which is noticeable.

The oceans of the Earth are most affected by the bulges as the liquid is the only thing that can movable on the surface of the Earth, also the movements are in the form of the tides.

Conclusion:

Thus, the gravitational pull of the moon produces tidal bulges on the water bodies of the Earth and thus the tides.
