Case summary:

A male nursing student was demanded to leave the room of the newly admitted patient by her husband person H. He explained that they were Muslim and according to their cultural beliefs, the body of the married woman should not be shown to another male than her husband. He asked the nursing student to make sure in his wife’s chart that there should be no male nurses in providing treatment to her. Though the nursing student understood the importance of culturally appropriate care, but he couldn’t remember the learning on how to respond to this situation.  

Explanation of Solution

In a similar situation, the nursing student’s response was found to respect the beliefs and values of the patient. This response should be maintained unless and until it is required for compromising the patient’s own integrity or for the safety of other persons.

The criteria provided in the given scenario in order to evaluate a successful outcome is found to be agreed. This is because; these criteria have found to attain all the necessary outcomes. The necessary outcome includes ensuring the well-being of the patient with respect to the cultural beliefs; providing culturally appropriate care to the patient as well as to her family; and gaining more experience at the end of the treatment rather than in the beginning.

The nursing student should gain knowledge of the patient’s culture and beliefs in order to ensure culturally appropriate care as well as staffing needs. The nursing student could check the hospital policies and then could follow it accordingly. The nursing student should be open to understand the culture and beliefs of the patients and their family members.
