According to the Lewis theory, in covalent bonding, atoms share their electrons. The steps for drawing a covalent Lewis structure are as follows:

Write the skeletal structure of the molecule.

Add the number of valence electrons of each atom in the molecule in order to calculate the total number of electrons present in that molecule.

Place the electrons by dots to complete the octets of the atoms.

If the central atom has not obtained an octet, then multiple bonds can be formed.

### Explanation of Solution

a) OF2

The skeletal structure of the compound OF2 is:

F     O     F

Now, calculate the total number of electrons for the molecule. Total electrons = valence electrons for O + valence electrons for F= 6 + 2(7)= 20

Place the electrons as dots to give octet to each of the atoms in the molecule. Draw a single bond between F and O. Put last four electrons on oxygen.

As all the atoms in the structure have obtained an octet, the structure is complete.

b) NI3

The Lewis structure of NI3 is as follows:

Nitrogen is the central atom and iodine atoms are arranged around it. Thus, the skeletal structure of the compound is:

I     N     I       I

Now, determine the total number of electrons for the molecule.

Total electrons = valence electrons for I + valence electrons for N= 3(7)+ 5= 26

Place the electrons as dots to give octet to each of the atoms present in the molecule. Put a single bond between N and I atom. Then, put last two electrons on N atom to complete its octet.

As all the atoms in the structure have obtained an octet, the structure is complete.

c) CS2

The Lewis structure of CS2 is as follows:

Carbon is the central atom and sulfur atoms are arranged around it
