Textbook Problem

# Use ratio and proportion to solve the following business situations.Angela Hatcher is planting flower bulbs in her garden for this coming summer. She intends to plant 1 bulb for every 5 square inches of flower bed.a. How many flower bulbs will she need for an area measuring 230 square inches?b. If the price is $1.77 for every 2 bulbs, how much will she spend on the flower bulbs? (a) To determine To calculate: The number of flower bulbs required to cover an area of 230 square inches, if for planting 1 bulb Angela Hatcher makes a flower bed of 5 square inches. Explanation Given Information: For planting 1 bulb Angela Hatcher makes a flower bed of 5 square inches. Formula used: To solve the proportional problem by using cross multiplication, follow the steps as mentioned below. Step 1: Represent the unknows by a letter. Step2: Set the proportion in the ratio of 1 on the both side of the equal sign. Step3: Multiply numerator of the left side ratio with the denominatior of right side ratio and place the product on one side of the equal sign. Step4: Multiply denominatior of the left side ratio with the nominatior of right side ratio and place the product on other side of the equal sign.(step2 and step3 performing togeter is consider as cross multiplication) Step5: Solve the unknown value. Calculation: Suppose that X be the number of flower bulbs required to cover an area of 230 square inches. Consider the area of 1 bulb flower bed, 5 square inches The proportion is “ X flowers is to 230 square inches equals 1 flower is to 5 square inches”, X230=15 Apply cross multiplication, this gives, (5)< (b) To determine To calculate: The amount spent on flower bulbs to cover an area of 230 square inches, if for planting 1 bulb Angela Hatcher makes a flower bed of 5 square inches and the cost of 2 bulbs is$1.77.
