Interpretation:

A Lewis structure for HC2H molecule is to be drawn.

Concept introduction:

The number of valence electrons of an atom is equal to the group number of the periodic table to which it belongs. The bonding atoms attain a stable electronic configuration, which generally has eight electrons in the valence shell.

The steps for drawing a covalent Lewis structure are as follows:

Write the skeletal structure of the molecule.

Atom that has the lowest electronegativity will be the central atom.

Add the number of valence electrons of each atom in the molecule to determine the total number of electrons in the molecule.

Place the electrons as dots to complete the octets of the atoms.

If the central atom has not obtained an octet, multiple bonds can be formed.

Explanation of Solution

Two carbon atoms are in the middle with one hydrogen atom attached to each carbon atom. Thus, the skeletal structure for the compound is:

H    C    C    H

Calculate the total number of valence electrons for the Lewis structure by the summation of the number of valence electrons of all the atoms.

Total number of valence electrons=2(# valence electron for H)+2(# valence electron for C)

Substitute 1 for the number of valence electrons in H and 4 for the number of valence electrons in C in the above expression:

Total number of valence electrons=2
