21-Year-Old Female with Skeletal Injuries
While riding her bike to campus, 21-year-old Liliana Rose was struck by a car. Examination in the Emergency Department reveals several injuries. Relative to her integumentary system, the following comments are noted on her chart:
•Epidermal abrasions of the right lateral upper arm and anterior shoulder.
•A deep, 2-cm laceration extending vertically on right lateral cheek and a horizontal 1-cm laceration on the temple.
•Cyanosis is apparent in her nail beds and lips.
The lacerated areas are cleaned, sutured (stitched), and bandaged by the emergency room (ER) personnel.
5. Two nursing students are discussing wound care, especially for abrasions. “The biggest issue is all the stuff the skin secretes!” one of them complains. “It’s crazy hard to keep a wound clean, and the patient is losing fluid through the abrasions. Plus all that acid! The last thing a wound needs is acid on it! Why hasn’t anyone developed a dressing that can stop skin secretions?”
The other student disagrees. “I don’t think skin would heal as well without its secretions. Doesn’t the body usually know what it’s doing?”
What’s your opinion, and why?

- You are looking at a slide from a patients sole. Which of the following layers of the epidermis would be present in the sample from your patient's sole, but not if you had taken a sample from the skin at their ankle? : Stratum corneum Stratum basale Stratum lucidum Stratum papillum In the "ABCD" rule used while diagnosing melanoma, B stands for: : behavior of the lesion blueness of the lesion border of the lesion blood vessels in the lesionarrow_forwardPlace the layers of the epidermis in order (1–5) from theoutermost layer to the layer attached to the dermis by thebasement membrane._____ stratum spinosum_____ stratum corneum_____ stratum basale_____ stratum lucidum_____ stratum granulosumarrow_forwardTrue or false: The dermis is composed of connective tissue, and it's main role is to provide direct protection from the external environment.arrow_forward
- Why is tattoo ink injected into the dermis?arrow_forwardBriefly describe the characteristics of each of the five thick skin, epidermal layers from deepest (stratum basale) to most superficial (stratum corneum).arrow_forwardMatch the following terms with the correct description. Write the letter only. deep region of the dermis composed primarily of dense irregular connective tissue composed of keratinized stratifified squamous epithelial tissue not considered part of the skin, it contains areolar and adipose tissues and blood vessels; attaches skin to underlying tissues and organs superfificial region of the dermis; composed of areolar connective tissue a. ________ subcutaneous layer (hypodermis) b. ________ papillary region c.________ reticular region d. ________ epidermisarrow_forward

- Which structures located in the dermis are of epidermal origin? If they originate from the epidermis, what type of tissue are they? Please, I appreciate your answer in your own words, (no paste and copy), thank you.arrow_forwardThe Integumentary System Assignment The integumentary system is a great example of the hierarchy within the levels of anatomical organization. For this assignment, you are going to apply what you learned about these levels, specifically to the integumentary system. Below is a visual tool (you are not required to present your answer in that format) to guide you through this assignment. Your job will be as follows: Fill in all of the structures within the integumentary system that fit into each level or organization. For example, one of the structures that would fit into the "tissue level" might be areolar connective tissue. Describe how the components of each level fit together to create the next higher level in 2-3 sentences. For example, how does the buildup of the cellular level lead to the development of the tissue level? You will be compiling the components of the cellular, tissue, organ, and organ system levels, not the chemical or organism levels.arrow_forwardIdentify the epidermal layer(s) in which the following cancers arise: (a) basal cell carcinoma; (b) malignant melanoma; (c) squamous cell carcinoma.arrow_forward
