Concept explainers
Environmental: Land Formations Arches National Park is located in southern Utah. The park is famous for its beautiful desert landscape and its many natural sandstone arches. Park Ranger Edward McCarrick started an inventory (not yet complete) of natural arches within the park that have an opening of at least 3 feet. The following table is based on information takenfrom the book Canyon Country Arches and Bridges by F. A. Barnes. The height of the arch opening is rounded to the nearest foot.
Height of arch, feet | 3-9 | 10-29 | 30-49 | 50-74 | 75 and higher |
Number of arches | |||||
in park | 111 | 96 | 30 | 33 | 18 |
For an arch chosen at random in Arches National Park, use the preceding information to estimate the
(a) 3 to 9 feet tall
(b) 30 feet or taller
(c) 3 to 49 feet tall
(d) 10 to 74 feet tall
(e) 75 feet or taller

Understanding Basic Statistics
- Running Speed A man is running around a circular track that is 200 m in circumference. An observer uses a stopwatch to record the runner’s time at the each of each lap, obtaining the data in the following table. (a) What was the man’s average speed (rate) between 68 s and 152 s? (b) What was the man’s average speed between 263 s and 412 s? (c) Calculate the man’s speed for cadi lap, Is he slowing down, speeding up, or neither?arrow_forwardGrade Point Average In many universities students are given grade points for each credit unit according to the following scale: A4 points B3 points C2 points D1 points F0 points For example, a grade of A in a 3-unit earns 43=12 grade points and grade points and a grade of B in a 5-unit course earns 35=15 grade points. A student’s grade point average (GPA) for these two courses is the total number of grade points earned divided by the number of units; in this case the GPA is (12+15)/8=3.375 . (a) Find a formula for a GPA of a student who earns a grade A in a units of course work, B in b units; C in c units, D in d units, and F in f units. (b) Find a GPA of a student who has earned a grade of A in two-units courses. B in one 4-unit course, and C in three 3-unit courses.arrow_forward
