Studies have shown that people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest have a better chance of survival if a defibrillator shock is administered very soon after cardiac arrest. How is survival rate related to the time between when cardiac arrest occurs and when the defibrillator shock is delivered? This question is addressed in the paper “Improving Survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest: The Role of Home Defibrillators” (by J. K. Stross, University of Michigan, February 2002; available at heartstarthome.com).
The accompanying data give y = Survival rate (percent) and x = Mean call-to-shock time (minutes) for a cardiac rehabilitation center (in which cardiac arrests occurred while victims were hospitalized and so the call-to-shock time tended to be short) and for four communities of different sizes:
- a. Construct a
scatterplot for these data. How would you describe the relationship between mean call-to-shock time and survival rate? - b. Find the equation of the least-squares line.
- c. Use the least-squares line to predict survival rate for a community with a mean call-to-shock time of 10 minutes.

- What is the step-step solution to this problem? Does posting calorie content for menu items affect people’s choices in fast-food restaurants? According to results obtained by Elbel, Gyamfi, and Kersh (2011), the answer is no. The researchers monitored the calorie content of food purchases for children and adolescents in four large fast-food chains before and after mandatory labeling began in New York City. Although most of the adolescents reported noticing the calorie labels, apparently the labels had no effect on their choices. Data similar to the results obtained show an average of M = 786 calories per meal with s = 85 for n = 100 children and adolescents before the labeling, compared to an average of M = 772 calories with s = 91 for a similar sample of n = 100 after the mandatory posting. Use a two-tailed test with a α .05 to determine whether the mean number of calories after the posting is significantly different than before calorie content was posted. 3. Blood samples from wild, free-ranging deer were obtained via the jugular vein immediately after an intramuscular injection of succinylcholine using darts and a capture gun. Deer were bled again approximately 30 minutes after the injection and then released. The level of androgens at time of capture and 30 minutes later, measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), for 15 deers as in Table Q1. Assuming that the populations of androgen at time of injection and 30 minutes later are normally distributed:i) Find the average and standard deviation of this studyii)Determine the critical region of this problem.iii) Test at the 0.05 level of significance whether the androgen concentrations are altered after 30 minutes of restraint.arrow_forward
- In a study attempting to replicate findings by Stephens, Atkins, & Kingston (2009), each participant was asked to plunge a hand into the icy water and keep it there as long as the pain would allow. In one condition, the participants repeated their favorite curse words while their hands were in the water. In the other condition, they repeated neutral words. The original research showed that, in addition to lowering the participants’ perception of pain, swearing also increased the amount of time they were able to tolerate the pain. Data similar to the results obtained in the study are shown in the following table: _____________Amount of Time (in Seconds)_ Participant Swear Words Neutral Words 1 94 59 2 70 61 3 52 47 4…arrow_forwardIn a study attempting to replicate findings by Stephens, Atkins, & Kingston (2009), each participant was asked to plunge a hand into the icy water and keep it there as long as the pain would allow. - Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant health problem. TBI is caused by impacts to the head that might occurduring contact sports, motor vehicle accidents, and similar events. TBI is known to produce cognitive impairments and reductions in brain volume. In a recent, repeated-measures study on TBI, Zagorchev et al.(2016) observed that the size of the amygdala among mild TBI patients was reduced at 12 months after injury, relative to two months after injury. Suppose that a researcher is interested in replicating and extending this observation. She recruits n=8 participants with mild TBI and records the volume of a brain region at 2 months and again and again at 12 months. Her data are listed below a.) Test the hypothesis that volume of the brain region changed between 2 & 12 months. Use α=0.05, two-tailed b.) The same is true of large, invasive breast cancer tumors and advanced stage disease; risk increases with weight, but higher rates are not explained by the frequency or accuracy of screening mammography before breast cancer was diagnosed.
