Chapter 5.3, Problem 1E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:The reason of better recovery from three extraction with 5-mL portions of a solvent as compared to single extraction with 15 mL of solvent needs to be explainedwhen K= 0.5.

Concept Introduction:

A solution is a mixture of solute and solvent. To separate the solute from the solution, different separation methods can be used. Separatory funnel is one of the most common method in which the solution is placed in a separatory funnel and shaken with an immiscible solvent. Solute distributes between both solvents to form two layers. At equilibrium the ratio of concentration of solute is constant in each layer that can be represented by partition coefficient or distribution coefficient. It is the ratio of the concentration of a substance in one medium (C1) to the concentration in a second medium (C2) at equilibrium.

  Kd =  C1C2

Compound X has a distribution coefficient (K) of 5 for ether/water. If 5.0 g of compound X were dissolved in 500.0 mL of water, how many grams of compound X would be recovered from the water layer after two consecutive extractions using 50.0 mL portions of fresh ether from each extraction
Which statement is true?   Statement 1: In paper chromatography, the more soluble substances in the mobile phase will tend to outdistance the less soluble. Statement 2: In paper chromatography, the less strongly adsorbed substances are held back while the more strongly adsorbed move on ahead of them
What is the minimum distribution constant that permits removal of 99% of a solute from 50.0 mL of water with two 25.0-mL extractions with toluene? five 10.0-mL extractions with toluene?
