The air masses drift with the usual atmospheric circulation, and the clashes of contrasting air masses are most common and regular in the mid-latitudes. During the movement of an air mass, it would interact with other different air masses possessing different moisture and temperature characteristics. The zone of contact between the two is referred as a front.

As a warmer and lighter mass of air is pushed or lifted aloft a cooler and denser mass of air, the sloping surface of front is produced.
