Answer to Problem 6.1P

The sludge requirement is 50% .

The refuse requirement is 50% .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Required C/N ratio is 20:1 .

  C/N ratio refuse is 24:1 .

  C/N ratio sludge is 16:1 .

Calculation:

Assume the refuse fraction be Xr .

Write the equation to calculate the sludge fraction.

  SF=(1Xr) ..... (I)

Here, the sludge fraction is SF .

Write the equation to complete the mass balance on carbon.

  20=24Xr+16(1Xr)5=6Xr+44Xr2Xr=1Xr=0.5

Calculate the value of Xr in percentage.

  Xr=(0.5×100)%=50%

Calculate the sludge fraction.

Substitute 0.5 for Xr in Equation (I).

  SF=10.5=(0.5×100)%=50%

Conclusion:

Thus, the mass balance on carbon is calculated first to find out the answer.
