To determine

The location where the development of rain could be expected in Figure 3.8(c).

Explanation

The air masses drift with the usual atmospheric circulation, and the clashes of contrasting air masses are most common and regular in the mid-latitudes. During the movement of an air mass, it would interact with other different air masses possessing different moisture and temperature characteristics. The zone of contact between the two is referred as a front.

Fronts are distinguished based on whether a colder air mass is advancing on a warmer one or vice versa. A cold front is produced when a mass of cold air dynamically advances on a mass of warmer air and pushes it upward. Cold fronts normally move swiftly with a blunted forward edge that pulls the warmer adjacent air upward, giving rise to forceful precipitation from the moisture present in the warmer air.

A warm front is formed when a warmer air mass stands as the aggressor and conquers a region occupied by a colder mass of air. Warm fronts move more slowly than that of cold fronts and substitute rather than displacing the cold air by sliding upward over it...
