Chapter 6.2, Problem 6.9P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The most stable and least stable conformations for the given compound has to be drawn in Newman projection.

Concept Introduction:

Conformation of a single bond in alkane can be visualized using Newman projection.  This depicts the groups that are attached to the carbon atoms as they are eclipsed or staggered.  Newman projection gives a clear idea about the conformation.  This is a 2D representation of the conformers.  To draw a Newman projection for a compound, the molecule has to be looked at an angle which gives a clear idea about which groups are present in the carbon atom in which direction.

Among the eclipsed and staggered conformations, the staggered conformation is the most stable one.  In the staggered conformation also, if the bulky groups are anti to each other means, then that will be the most stable one.  In eclipsed conformation, if the two bulky groups are cis to each other, then it will be the least stable one.  The various conformation can be obtained by rotating the first carbon atom keeping the second carbon atom fixed.
