Chapter 6.3, Problem 1RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Whether empirical formula and molecular formula for a compound can be same or not needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction: Whole number ratio of atoms in a compound can be represented by empirical formula but number of each type of atom in a molecule is shown by molecular formula.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

An empirical formula represents only the ratio between actual numbers of atoms present in a molecule of a compound but the actual number of atoms of each element of the compound is represented by molecular formula.

Explanation of Solution

The molecular formula of a compound may be the empirical formula or it’s a multiple ofempirical formula.

Example-Molecular formula C4H8 shows it contains four atoms of carbon and eight atoms of hydrogen but its empirical formula is CH2. For any compound, empirical formula can be equal to the molecular formula. For example, empirical and molecular formula of methane is CH4.
