Mutations Can Uncouple Chromosomal Sex from Phenotypic Sex

How can an individual who is XY be phenotypically female?

Summary Introduction

To determine: The reason due to which an individual who is XY becomes a phenotypic female.

Introduction: There are obvious phenotypic differences among males and females. The differences between the sexes in humans are emphasized with the help of secondary sex characteristics which include the body size, the patterns of fat distribution, muscle mass, and the development of male or female sex organs such as penis or vagina respectively.

Explanation of Solution

The terms genetic sex and phenotypic sex are defined as follows:

  • Genetic sex

Chromosomes of an individual are used to determine its genetic sex. A sperm with a Y chromosome, fertilizing an egg with X chromosome gives rise to a zygote having XY sex chromosomes. An individual having one X chromosome and one Y chromosome is referred to a male. An individual having XX sex chromosomes is referred to female.

  • Phenotypic sex

The appearance of a male or female reproductive system which is represented by a developed penis and testes in males and a developed vagina in females is called phenotypic sex.

Complete androgen insensitivity also known as CAIS is an example where the pathway from genetic sex to phenotypic sex is disrupted...
