Sex-Influenced and Sex-Limited Traits

It has been shown that hormones interact with DNA to turn certain genes on and off. Use this fact to explain sex-limited and sex-influenced traits.

Summary Introduction

To explain: The sex-limited and sex-influenced traits on the basis of the fact that hormones interact with DNA to turn certain genes on and off.

Introduction: There are obvious phenotypic differences among males and females. The differences between the sexes in humans are emphasized with the help of secondary sex characteristics which include the body size, the patterns of fat distribution, muscle mass, and the development of male or female sex organs such as penis or vagina respectively.

Explanation of Solution

The phenotypic expression of a trait is different in some males and females. Sex-limited and sex-influenced traits are two reasons due to which this condition occurs.

The terms sex-influenced traits and sex-limited traits are explained as follows:

  • Sex-influenced traits

These are the traits which are expressed differently in both males and females. For example, the development of muscles is influenced by androgen levels in an individual. High levels of androgen in males result in the increased activation of muscle genes in males due to which they have more muscles as compared to females which have low levels of androgen thereby, causing less activation of muscle gene.

  • Sex-limited traits

Sex-limited traits are dictated by sex-limited genes. Both males and females inherit sex-limited genes, but they are normally expressed in either males or females...
