Chapter 7, Problem 1BS.1QC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

“How the production of food crops is affected due to rise in temperature”.

Introduction:

The greenhouse gases contribute to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The high concentration of carbon dioxide results in increase the temperature of the atmosphere. These gases absorb the infrared rays and emit the radiation into the atmosphere that result in increase the temperature of the atmosphere. The greenhouse gases also contributes the global warming effect.

Explanation of Solution

The increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere cause the rise in atmospheric temperature. This rise in temperature result in melting of glaciers which release methane and increase methane concentration in the environment. This increased concentration of methane lead to global warming.

It was estimated that the gradual increase in concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affects the rate of photosynthesis. The high concentration of carbon dioxide decreases the availability of water and mineral which affect the productivity of crops. The higher temperature also reduced the availability of nitrogen containing compound which also affects the crop productivity.

Conclusion

The rise in temperature reduces the photosynthesis process which affects the productivity of crops.
