Textbook Problem

Case 1

2. COHb causes the oxygen dissociation curve to shift to the __________________.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The given blank space in the statement, “COHb causes the oxygen dissociation curve to shift to the __________,” is to be filled-in.

Introduction:

The relation between the partial pressure of oxygen and oxygen saturation is depicted in the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve. The partial pressure of oxygen is represented on the x-axis and the oxygen saturation is shown on the y-axis. The P50 (partial pressure at which the hemoglobin remains 50% saturated with oxygen) value is taken as the reference point in the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve.

Please refer to Clinical Application Case-1 for further infromation.

Explanation

The affinity of carbon monoxide toward hemoglobin molecule is 210 times higher than the that of oxygen. Thus, a very small amount of carbon monoxide (CO) can bind with a very large amount of hemoglobin. This binding of the carbon monoxide with the hemoglobin reduces the chances of free oxygen to bind with the hemoglobin molecule. Carboxyhemoglobin is a state in which the hemoglobin remains bound with the carbon monoxide, and is denoted by COHb.
