Concept explainers
To list: The planes in which each wrist, hand, and finger joint movements occur and the axis of rotation for each movement in the plane.
Introduction: The hand is the terminal portion of the human arm present below the forearm. The wrist is the region or joint between the arm and hand and it allows movements along two axes. There are three joint present in the fingers, namely interphalangeal joint, metacarpophalangeal joint, and proximal interphalangeal joint.
Explanation of Solution
a. Abduction: Abduction is the movement of a limb away from the body’s midline. The abduction is the opposite of the adduction. The plane of motion for abduction in the hand, wrist, and finger joint is the frontal plane and the axis of rotation is the sagittal axis.
b. Adduction: Adduction is the movement of the body part toward the midline of the body. The plane of motion for adduction in the hand, wrist, and finger joint is the frontal plane and the axis of rotation is the sagittal axis.
c. Flexion: Flexion is defined as the state of being bent or the process of bending, especially the bending of joints or limb. The plane of motion for flexion in the hand, wrist, and finger joint is a sagittal plane and the axis of rotation is the frontal axis.
d. Extension: Extension is a straightening movement that increases the angle between the body parts and it is the opposite of flexion. The plane of motion for extension in the hand, wrist, and finger joint is a sagittal plane and the axis of rotation is the frontal axis.
