FIGURE 7.24 Typical chaparral vegetation forms a dense cover of shrubs and low trees near San Diego, California.

Why is wildfire a problem in this kind of Mediterranean climate biome?

To determine

The reason why wildfire is a problem in this kind of Mediterranean climate biome.

Explanation

The natural vegetation in Mediterranean regions reflects the distinct dry–wet seasonal pattern of the climate. The land is covered with lush, green grasses in rainy season which turns golden brown in the summer drought and when the rains returns in the winter or late autumn, the landscape turns green again.

Majority of the vegetation is sclerophyllous (hard-leafed) and drought resistant. Similar to xerophytes, sclerophyllous plants have hard exteriors, small glossy and thick leaves that resist loss of moisture, and deep root system to help fight dryness.
