# The maximum dry unit weight of a quartz sand determined in the laboratory is 18.5 kN/m3. If the relative compaction in the field is 88%, determine the hydraulic conductivity of the sand in the field compaction condition. Given: Gs = 2.66, D10 = 0.28 mm, and Cu = 4.2. Use Eq. (7.34).

To determine

Find the hydraulic conductivity of the sand in the field compaction condition.

Explanation

Given information:

The dry unit weight of the quartz sand (γd(max)) determined in the laboratory is 18.5kN/m3.

The relative compaction in the field (R) is 88 %.

The specific gravity of the quartz sand (Gs) is 2.66.

The effective size of the sand (D10) is 0.28 mm.

The uniformity coefficient (Cu) is 4.2.

Calculation:

Determine the dry unit weight of the sand in the field using the relation.

γd(field)=Rγd(max)

Substitute 88 % for R and 18.5kN/m3 for γd(max).

γd(field)=88100×18.5=16.28kN/m3

Determine the void ratio (e) using the relation.

e=Gsγwγd(field)1

Here, γw is the unit weight of water.

Take unit weight of water as 9.81kN/m3
