Concept explainers
You serve as the president of XYZ corporation, which is an energy intensive manufacturing operation. You have four boilers to produce steam and electricity for your operations. One is a semi-suspension fired boiler with a capacity of 100 tons of coal per hour. The boiler can also burn supplemental fuel such as coconut or macadamia nut shells. The other three boilers arc peaking units and burn fuel oil. The City of Podunk has approached you about the possibility of burning solid waste as a supplemental fuel. As the president of the XYZ Corporation, you need to develop answers to many political, social, and technical questions before you make a commitment to the city.
a. What specific questions would you ask your own power plant engineer about the possibility of accepting Podunk’s MSW?
b. What specific additional data would you need from the city
before you discuss this further?

- A 1000 MW coal fired power plant (30% efficiency). The coal is 75% carbon and has a heat content of 10, 000 BTU/lb. What is the carbon emission (ton carbon per year)?A 1000 MW natural gas plant (45% efficiency). The gas is CH4 with a heat content 800 BTU/mol. What is the carbon emission (ton carbon per year)?Calculate carbon emission reduction if the above natural gas plant is used to replace the coal fired plant.(Here ton is metric ton, 1 ton=2,200 lb)arrow_forwardA petroleum refinery processes 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day and operates with an energy efficiency of 90%. The oil and the petroleum products have enrgy contents of 35 MJ/L. What are the energy and fuel volume flows to and from this refinery, in J/day? ( One barrel of oil is 159 liters).arrow_forwardConsider a new 38% efficient 600-MW power plant burning 9,000 Btu/lb coal containing 1% sulfur. If a 70% efficient scrubber is used, what would be the emission rate of sulfur (lb/hr)?arrow_forward
- Why some diesel vehicles have battery-driven attached to the fuel tanks in order to be able to power them with natural oil? How does this affect? Why some diesel vehicles have two tanks, one with petrodiesel and the other one with vegetable oil? - A new coal-fired power plant has been built using a sulfur emission control system that is 70 percent efficient. If all of the sulfur oxidizes to SO2 and if the emission of SO2 are lmited to 0.6 lb SO2 per million Btu of heat into the power plant, what maximum percent sulfur content can the fuel have if 15,000 Btu/lb coal is burned?arrow_forwardWhich emits more SOx per unit amount of electricity produced; a coal-fired plant with a 90% efficient SO2 scrubber or an oil-fired plant with m scrubber? Assume the coal has a heat content of 13,000 Btu/lb and contains 3.5% sulfur, and that the oil has a heat content of 6.0(10)* Biu/barrel (42 gallons) and contains 0.9% sulfur, Assume the oil has a specific gravity of 0,92.arrow_forwardWhen 1 cu ft of natural gas is burned, 1,050 Btu of heat are produced. In oneday, a building uses 761,250 Btu of heat. How many cubic feet of gas areburned?arrow_forward
