Do you think that XY individuals with complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS) have an unfair advantage in competing with XX individuals in athletics? Why or why not?

Summary Introduction

To determine: Whether XY individuals with complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS) have an unfair advantage in competing with XX individuals in athletics or not.

Introduction: A disorder where the pathway from genetic sex to phenotypic sex is disrupted is known as complete androgen insensitivity. In this, a mutation in a gene called androgen receptor which is present on the X chromosome is observed. This mutation causes XY individuals to depict phenotypic characteristics of females because the fetal body of these individuals does not react to the male sex hormone called androgen which is responsible for developing male phenotypic characteristics.

Explanation of Solution

The individuals with XY chromosomes having CAIS have androgen levels equivalent to males but their phenotypic characteristics are similar to females due to which they compete with normal females having XX chromosomes in athletics. The androgen enhances the formation of muscles because more muscle genes are activated by the presence of androgen and thus, the speed, power, a...
