Chapter 8, Problem 1CA
Summary Introduction

Introduction: Muscle is a soft tissue that is present in most animals. A skeletal muscle is composed of numerous muscle cells known as muscle fibers. Muscle fibers are covered by three layers of connective tissues. A skeletal muscle fiber is a cell that constricts in response to stimulation.

Answer to Problem 1CA

The three types of muscle tissues are skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.

Explanation of Solution

Skeletal muscle: It is a voluntary muscle and attached to bones or skin. Each fiber is innervated by the branches of the somatic motor neuron as a part of the motor unit and it is under the control of the nervous system. It contracts quickly. No rhythmic constrictions, strength increases with stretching, and it can fatigue easily.

Cardiac muscle: Cardiac muscle is present only in the heart. It is self-stimulating in which impulse conducts from cell to cell. It is under the control of nervous as well as the endocrine system. It shows the intermediate speed of contraction and rhythmic contractions. However, strength increases with stretching and it does not get fatigued.

Smooth muscle: Smooth muscle is a non-striated, involuntary muscle. It is present in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach and intestines.
