Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1OQ

Option (d).

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for momentum,

   P=mv        (I)

Here, P is the momentum, m is the mass, and v is the velocity.

Write the expression for the conservation of momentum that is the momentum is the same before and after the collision,

  m1iv1i+m2iv2i+=m1fv1f+m2fv2f+        (I)

Here, here subscripts i  and f  denote the initial and final momenta of objects in a system, m1 and v1 are the mass and velocity respectively for object 1 and m2 , v2 are the mass and velocity respectively for object 2.

Momentum is the same before the collision, thus expression (I) can be re-written as,

  m1v1+m2v2        (II)

Here, m1 and v1 are the mass and velocity respectively for object 1 and m2 , v2 are the mass and velocity respectively for object 2.

Conclusion

Substitute 3 kg for m1 and +2 m/s for v1 and 2 kg for m2 and -4 m/s for v2 in expression (II).

  m1v1+m2v2=(3 kg)(+2 m/s)+(2 kg)(-4 m/s)=68=2kg.m/s.

Since, momentum is the same before and after the collision, the momentum of the system will be 2kg.m/s. thus, option (d) is the correct option.

All other option are incorrect.
