FIGURE 8.21 Building of the Isthmus of Panama between about 10 million and 4 million years ago blocked a connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins resulting in a major reorientation of ocean currents. This event led to the circular ocean current patterns that exist today in both oceans and had a great impact on climate.

How do ocean currents along east and west coasts outside the tropics affect climate?

Expert Solution
To determine

The influence ocean currents along the east and west coasts outside the tropics in climate.

Explanation of Solution

More than 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with oceans. The huge volume and high heat capacity make it the largest buffer against changes in the climate of the Earth. Significant changes are resulted in global climate due to the difference in temperature of oceans, its chemistry and circulation.

Surface ocean currents are driven mostly by the activity of winds. However, the deep ocean currents that are present deep below the ocean water surface circulate large volumes of water between the ocean basins and thereby affect the heat distribution on the Earth. The buoyancy of water resulting from the difference in salinity acts as a major driving force of the deep circulation.

Due to rapid surface evaporation, the salinity content of seawater increases and thereby seawater density also increases...
