FIGURE 8.22 Barringer Crater, Arizona, was formed by the impact of an iron-nickel meteorite that had a diameter of about 50 meters (165 ft).

Can you conceive of the damage that would occur if a similar meteorite impacted an urban area?

To determine

The damage that would occur following the impact of an iron-nickel meteorite in an urban area.

Explanation

The parts of solar system that is rock or metallic in composition is termed as asteroids. Generally, they have a diameter of less than 800 kilometers (500 mil). It can break into smaller pieces and they are known as meteoroids. Along with comets, these objects orbit the Sun. Over time, some of this material struck the Earth and it results in a devastating impact.

Many meteoroids are very small and before hitting the ground they burn up in the atmosphere. They are known as shooting stars. Due to the friction with atmosphere, the objects that has a diameter less than 40 meters (130 ft) burn, whereas the objects that have a dimeter ranging from 40 meters to about 1 kilometers (0.6 mi) will result in tremendous damage when they reach the surface of the Earth. Approximately, on every few hundred thousand years, an object that has a diameter more than 1.6 kilometers (1 mi) struck the Earth and thereby causes severe environmental damage and change in climate on a global scale...
