DATA For the Texas Department of Public Safety, you are investigating an accident that occurred early on a foggy morning in a remote section of the Texas Panhandle. A 2012 Prius traveling due north collided in a highway intersection with a 2013 Dodge Durango that was traveling due east. After the collision, the wreckage of the two vehicles was locked together and skidded across the level ground until it struck a tree. You measure that the tree is 35 ft from the point of impact. The line from the point of impact to the tree is in a direction 39° north of east. From experience, you estimate that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the ground and the wreckage is 0.45. Shortly before the collision, a highway patrolman with a radar gun measured the speed of the Prius to be 50 mph and, according to a witness, the Prius driver made no attempt to slow down. Four people with a total weight of 460 lb were in the Durango. The only person in the Prius was the 150-lb driver. The Durango with its passengers had a weight of 6500 lb, and the Prius with its driver had a weight of 3042 lb. (a) What was the Durango’s speed just before the collision? (b) How fast was the wreckage traveling just before it struck the tree?

- While driving to work one day, I was holding my coffee mug in my left hand while changing the radio station with my right hand. Then my cell phone rang, so I placed the mug on the flat part of my dashboard. Then, believe it or not, a deer ran out of the woods and onto the road right in front of me. Fortunately, my reaction time was zero, and I was able to stop from a speed of 17 m/s in a mere 50 m, just barely avoiding the deer, without the coffee mug sliding. The mug (with coffee) had a mass of 550 g, and the mass of the deer was 150 kg. Part A What is the minimum possible value of the coefficient of static friction between the mug and the dashboard? It takes 0.00032 sec to come to a stop after striking the stump. What was the force on the bullet during impact? (answer in Newtons)arrow_forwardIn 1987, as a Halloween stunt, two sky divers passed a pumpkin back and forth between them while they were in free fall just west of Chicago. The stunt was great fun until the last sky diver with the pumpkin opened his parachute. The pumpkin broke free from his grip, plummeted about 0.5 km, ripped through the roof of a house, slammed into the kitchen floor, and splattered all over the newly remodeled kitchen. From the sky diver’s viewpoint and from the pumpkin’s viewpoint, why did the sky diver lose control of the pumpkin?arrow_forward
- You are working as an expert witness for the defense of a container ship captain whose ship ran into a reef surrounding an island. The captain is being charged with intentionally running the ship into the reef. In discovery, the following information is correct: The ship was traveling at 2.5 m/s toward the reef when a mechanical failure caused the rudder to jam in the straight-ahead position. At that point in time, the ship was 900 m from the reef. The wind was blowing directly toward the reef and exerting a constant force of 9.00 x 103 N on the boat in a direction toward the reef. The mass of the ship and its cargo was 5.50 x 107kg. During the preparation for the trial, the captain claims that without control of the direction of travel, the only choice he had was to put the engines in reverse at maximum power, such that the total force exerted by the frictional drag force of the water on the propeller was 1.25 x 105 N in a direction away from the reef. From this information, construct…arrow_forwardA child with mass of 16.5 kg stands on the edge of a park bench and leaps into the air. - A 5.0-kilogram grenade lying motionless on the ground explodes into three pieces. (It's not a very sophisticated grenade.) A 2.0-kilogram piece flies off at 18 meters per second and 110 degrees. A 1.7-kilogram piece flies off at 31 meters per second and 270 degrees. What is the velocity of the third piece? Include units in your answers.arrow_forwardYou are working part-time for the GT Sports Media Complex, editing video for the women’s softball team. In one particular clip, a GT player hits a home run over the center field fence. The ball leaves the bat at a height of 4 ft, and crosses the outfield fence (220 ft away) at a height of 10 ft. Logs of the game indicate that the pitch was clocked at 68 mph as it reached the plate. Your frame-by-frame analysis of the 30-frame-per-second video indicate that the ball spent only a single frame in contact with tha bat, and another 126 frames travelling to the outfield fence. A quick internet seach tells you that a typical college softball weighs 0.4 lb. How many pounds of average force act on the ball during ocntact with the bat?arrow_forwardWhen visiting a friend in Atlanta you decide to drive around the city. You turn a corner and are driving up a steep hill. Suddenly, a small boy runs out on the street chasing a ball. You slam on the brakes and skid to a stop leaving a 50-foot-long skid mark on the street. The boy calmly walks away but a policemen watching from the sidewalk walks over and gives you a speeding ticket. He points out that the speed limit on this street is 25mph. After you recover your wits, you begin to examine the situation. You determine that the street makes an angle of 25◦ with the horizontal and that the coefficient of static friction between your tires and the street is 0.80. You also find that the coefficient of kinetic friction between your tires and the street is 0.60. Your car’s information book tells you that the mass of your car is 1600 kg. You weigh 140 lbs. Will you fight the ticket in court? Please draw a figure with your detailed answer.arrow_forward
- A standard Ford F150 has a standard tire size of 25.7 inches in diameter. You decided to replace the standard tires with a tire with a diameter of 28.2 inches without updating the onboard computer. Last week you were stopped for speeding on the highway where the speed limit is 65 mph. With the change in tires, how fast was the truck actually traveling when the speedometer read 65 mph? If you had used 24 inch tires, what would the actual speed have been if the speedometer read 65 mph?arrow_forwardA bird rests on a branch in an aok tree, 12 m above the grassland, as it watches it's young birds.
