Chapter 8.3, Problem 23P

Medical: Blood Type A random sample of medical files is used to estimate the proportion p of all people who have blood type B.

(a) If you have no preliminary estimate for p, how many medical files should you include in a random sample in order to be 85 % sure that the point estimate p ^ will be within a distance of 0.05 from p?

(b) Answer part (a) if you use the preliminary estimate that about 8 out of 90 people have blood type B (Reference: Manual of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests by F. Fischbach).

Color blindness, or dyschromatopsia, is a form of genetic deficiency in color perception. The condition is much more prevalent among males than females, pointing to a genetic connection with the X chromosome. The frequency of dyschromatopsia in the Caucasian American male population is about 8%. However, it is thought that this proportion might be smaller among males of other ethnicities. We want to estimate the proportion of Asian American males who are color-blind. How large a sample size do we need in order to obtain a 95% confidence interval with a margin of error no greater than 4%, or 0.04? n=__________
Incidence rate in the last influenza epidermic was found to be 50 per thousand (5) of the population exposed. What should be the size of a sample to find incidence rate in the current epidemic if allowable error is 0.005 and 0.01?
Every 5 years a city conducts a survey of residents to collect data on various political, economic, an health indicators. With a new survey coming this year the mayor is especially concerned with jobs and the economy. In the last survey only 41% of people in the city said they felt very secure in their job. The mayor wants to be able to estimate that proportion for this year to within a margin of error of +/- 2%. How large of a sample will be needed.
