Chapter 8.4, Problem 3CC
Textbook Problem

Why is atmospheric circulation between the two hemispheres centered about the meteorological equator, not the geographical equator? Why is there a difference? (Hint: Think of the heat capacity of water and which hemisphere contains more surface water.)

Expert Solution
To determine

The reason why atmospheric circulation between the two hemispheres is centered about the meteorological equator and not the geographical equator. Also, describe the reason for the difference.

Explanation of Solution

In the Northern hemisphere, seasonal differences in temperature and cell circulation are more extreme due to the less ocean surface in the Northern hemisphere than south and due to lower specific heat of landmasses than the ocean. The position of intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is a result of markedly different proportions of land to the surface of the ocean in the two hemispheres. The convergence zone does not coincide with geographical equator. Instead, it is situated at the meteorological equator, which can be defined as an irregular imaginary line of thermal equilibrium between the hemispheres...
