Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The molecular formula of compound A is C6H12. It reacts with one molar equivalent of H2/Pd. It reacts with OsO4 to give the diol B. When oxidized with KMnO4, A gives propanoic acid and a ketone. The structures of A, B, C are to be given. All the reactions are to be written and explained.

Concept introduction:

From the molecular formula the degree of unsaturation can be calculated. The reaction with H2/Pd and that with OsO4 shows the presence of double bonds. When oxidized with KMnO4 a disubstituted carbon in a double bond is converted in to a ketone and a monosubstituted carbon in double bond gives a carboxylic acid.
