List and briefly explain the four steps performed during the logical design stage.

Program Plan Intro

Database Design:

  • The second stage of DBLC (Database Life cycle) is the database design.
  • DBLC is a sequential process which is used to trace the history of the application that is present within the information system.
  • The design phase consists of three stages and they are:
    • Conceptual design
      • Design a database that is independent of software and physical details.
    • Logical design
      • The main design goal is to make an enterprise wide database.
      • Design a database that is based on the specific data model but independent of physical details.
    • Physical design
      • It is used to determine the storage capabilities of the data in an organization and its access characteristics.
      • It ensures the integrity, security and performance.

Explanation of Solution

Four steps of the Logical design:

The below are the four stages of the logical design and they are:

  • Mapping the conceptual model to the logical model components.
  • The logical model is validated using the concept of normalization.
  • The integrity constraint of the logical model is validated.
  • The logical model gets validated against the user requirement.

Step 1: Mapping the conceptual model to the logical model components

  • The conceptual model is being converted in the form of table definition.
  • The table definition includes name of the table, name of the column, primary key and foreign keys.
  • The keys and definition are used in implementing the entities and relationships that are being mentioned in the conceptual design.

Step 2: The logical model is validated using the concept of normalization.

  • Normalization issues can be easily identified during the mapping process; that is mapping conceptual model to logical model components.
  • This stage is used to validate the table definitions that are applied in the previous step...
