Child-rearing practices can derail the drive for self-actualization.
Introduction:
Improper child-rearing and inadequate educational practices can easily derail the self-actualization drive in adulthood. Maslow cited the usual boy’s sex-role training, where they are taught to inhibit many qualities like sentimentality and tenderness. Thus, this aspect of their nature is not encouraged to develop fully. When children are being overprotected, not encouraged to try new behaviors, practice new skills, or explore new ideas, then these children are quite likely to be inhibited even as adults, unable to express themselves fully in activities vital to self-actualization.
