To determine

To rank: In order from largest to smallest momentum for five different objects.

Answer to Problem 1CQ

The momentum for five different objects from largest to smallest ranked is p2x>p1x=p3x=p5x>p4x_ .

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

Refer to Figure Q9.1 in the textbook for five different objects with their masses and velocities.

From the figure, mass of the object 1 (m1) is 20 g.

Velocity of the object 1 (v1x) is 1ms .

Mass of the object 2 (m2) is 20 g.

Velocity of the object 2 (v2x) is 2ms .

Mass of the object 3 (m3) is 10 g.

Velocity of the object 3 (v3x) is 2ms .

Mass of the object 4 (m4) is 10 g.

Velocity of the object 4 (v4x) is 1ms .

Mass of the object 5 (m5) is 200 g.

Velocity of the object 5 (v5x) is 0.1ms .

Formula used:

Write the expression for momentum of an object (in x-direction) in terms of its mass and velocity as follows.

px=mvx (1)

Here,

m is the mass of the object, and

vx is the velocity of the object in x-direction.

Calculation of momentum for object 1 p1x :

Modify the expression in equation (1) to calculate the momentum of object 1 as follows.

p1x=m1v1x

Substitute 20 g for m1 , and 1ms for v1x ,

p1x=(20g)(1ms)=20gms

Calculation of momentum for object 2 p2x :

Modify the expression in equation (1) to calculate the momentum of object 2 as follows.

p2x=m2v2x

Substitute 20 g for m2 , and 2ms for v2x ,

p2x=(20g)(2ms)=40gms

Calculation of momentum for object 3 p3x :

Modify the expression in equation (1) to calculate the momentum of object 3 as follows.

p3x=m3v3x

Substitute 10 g for m3 , and 2ms for v3x ,

p3x=(10g)(2ms)=20gms

Calculation of momentum for object 4 p4x :

Modify the expression in equation (1) to calculate the momentum of object 4 as follows.

p4x=m4v4x

Substitute 10 g for m4 , and 1ms for v4x ,

p4x=(10g)(1ms)=10gms

Calculation of momentum for object 5 p5x :

Modify the expression in equation (1) to calculate the momentum of object 5 as follows.

p5x=m5v5x

Substitute 200 g for m5 , and 0.1ms for v5x ,

p5x=(200g)(0.1ms)=20gms

From the calculations of the momentum of each object, the ranks are given from largest to the smallest as follows.

p2x>p1x=p3x=p5x>p4x

Conclusion:

Thus, the momentum for five different objects from largest to smallest ranked is p2x>p1x=p3x=p5x>p4x_ .
