Answer to Problem 1CQ

The two possible changes that hit the pins with large momentum are explained.

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

A person bowls with a 10 pound ball. The person throws the ball with a speed of 10 mph.

The person is decided to hit the pins with a ball that has large momentum. It is required to explain about the possible changes that he has to be implemented to achieve the large momentum.

Formula used:

Refer to the equation (9.6) in the textbook, and write the expression for momentum of an object as follows.

p=mv (1)

Here,

m is the mass of the object, and

v is the velocity of the object.

Explanation:

From equation (1), the momentum of the ball is directly related with the mass and velocity of the ball.

Therefore, the following are the two possible changes need to be done by the person to hit the pins with large momentum.

  1. 1. The ball which has large mass (more than 10 pounds) need to be used to hit the pins, and
  2. 2. The person needs to throw the ball with large velocity (more than 10 mph).

Conclusion:

Thus, the two possible changes that hit the pins with large momentum are explained.
