Chapter 9, Problem 20QP
Textbook Problem

Indicate in which category, transcription or translation, each of the following functions belongs: RNA poly-merase, ribosomes, nucleotides, tRNA, pre-mRNA, DNA, anticodon, amino acids.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The categories of RNA polymerase, ribosomes, nucleotides, tRNA, pre-mRNA, DNA, anticodon, and amino acids.

Introduction: In a biological system, the information passes from DNA to RNA, and from RNA to protein. The information present on the DNA decides the production of protein. The process of the transfer of information involves various enzymes, molecules, and organelles, such as RNA polymerase, DNA template, tRNA, amino acids, and ribosomes.

Explanation of Solution

The process in which the strands of DNA are converted into mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) with the help of various enzymes is known as transcription. In transcription, the complementary base pairing takes place. Transcription process results in the production of pre-mRNA, which contains portions that are known as introns and exons. Pre-mRNA is converted into mature mRNA by cutting the intron portion and attaching the exon portion together with the help of enzymes.

The following functions belong to transcription:

  • DNA- It is converted into mRNA during the process of transcription.
  • RNA polymerase- It reads the coding section of DNA and helps in the production of pre-mRNA.
  • Nucleotides- These are the parts of DNA and RNA...
