The soil is an open system and is exposed to weathering. The minerals of top-soil and other fine particles are leached into the sub-soil by the process of eluviation and are deposited in the subsoil by the process of illuviation. Also, the capillary water deposits the minerals on the top soil when it is dried.

Weathering breaks the soil particles and also moves soil from one place to the other. The soil parent material differs from one soil to another. Once the organic processes begin among the mineral particles or rock fragments, chemical and physical changes help in the development of soil down through the parent material.
