a) Number of moles of CO2 are produced by the combustion of 4×1012Kg of C8H18.

The amount of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 0.04% and the world uses 4×1012Kg of petroleum per year.

The reaction is as follows:

2C8H18(l)+25O2(g)16CO2(g)+18H2O(g).

The equation for the reaction of C8H18 with O2 is as follows:

2C8H18(l)+25O2(g)16CO2(g)+18H2O(g)

The mass of C8H18 is converted into grams as follows:

1Kg=1000gThemassoftheC8H18ingrams=4.0×1012×1000g=4.0×1015g

The moles of C8H18 are calculated using the expression as follows:

Moles of C8H18=GivenMassMolecularMass.

Substitute the value of given mass and molecular mass in the above expression.

The volume of CO2 produced is calculated by the expression as follows:

Volume of CO2=Moles of CO2×22.4L.

Substitute the value of moles of CO2 in the above expression.

Volume of CO2=2.8×1014mole×22.4L=6.3×1015L.

Hence, the volume of CO2 produced is 6.3×1015L.

c) The number of years it will take to double the amount of CO2 currently present in the atmosphere.

The volume of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 1.5×1018L.

The volume of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 1.5×1018L. All CO2 is produced by the combustion of petroleum. The number of years it will take to double the amount of CO2 is calculated as follows:

Numberofyear=volumeofpresentCO2volumeofCO2produced.

Substitute the volume of CO2 present and the volume of CO2 produced in the above expression.

Numberofyear=1.5×1018L6.3×1015L=240years
